Fort Madison welcomes the Tri-State Rodeo each year, where people come from all around to celebrate our long-standing connection with an agrarian culture. Our annual Hot Air Balloon festival is held in mid-July. Fort Madison kicks off the winter holiday festivities with a Parade of Lights the Friday evening after Thanksgiving. This was the location of the first U.S. Military fort in the upper Mississippi region, a replica of the original fort stands along the river in Riverview Park. You will find this replica across the street from the newly renovated Kingsley Inn. Fort Madison was built to control trade and pacify Native Americans in the upper Mississippi River region.
With a population of 11,051, Fort Madison is located along the Mississippi River in the Southeast corner of Iowa. It is one of two county seats of Lee County (the other in Keokuk, Iowa). It is the only county in Iowa with two seats of government. The city of Fort Madison was established around the site of the Historic Fort Madison around 1808 - 1813.
Sheaffer Pens were developed and made in Fort Madison for many years and is another point of interest. We invite you to visit the Sheaffer Pen Museum. Fort Madison is proud to have the oldest prison west of the Mississippi, whose beautiful stone architecture dominates the landscape of our East side. Home to the World’s longest (3140 feet) double deck 525 foot swing-span bridge, which allows our 70 trains a day to cross the Mississippi, as well as opening over 2000 times a year to allow barges to move goods and materials across the world. Siemans, who is producing Wind Turbine blades, has made Fort Madison their home. The Wind Turbine blades help us harness Nature to power our future.
